My Second Blood Bowl Match with Ogres

Image
My Second Blood Bowl Match with Ogres After my first Blood Bowl match with Ogres, it was time for game two. This time my opponents were Skaven, coached by Pete, one of the Agents of Sigmar from the YouTube channel and a regular gaming opponent of mine. Pete has a habit of playing Skaven whenever he gets the opportunity, so I knew exactly what to expect. Fast players, plenty of dodging and Gutter Runners capable of scoring from almost anywhere on the pitch. In contrast, my Ogre Team would need to rely on brute force, casualties and the occasional thrown Gnoblar to compete. Building My Ogre Team Roster This was my second game with the team and I was hoping to build upon what I had learned in my first outing. Going into the game, I had a very simple strategy. The Skaven team was significantly faster and more agile than my Ogres, so I had little interest in trying to win a conventional game of Blood Bowl. Instead, my aim was to remove as many Skaven players as possible, g...

My First Blood Bowl Game With Ogres

My First Blood Bowl Game With Ogres Having spent the last couple of weeks building my Ogre team and painting the first few models, I was finally ready to play my first game of Blood Bowl in 20 years. I headed down to our little local club and met up with my first opponent Neil, who was fielding a Norse team. After a surprisingly bruising game featuring flying Gnoblars, the tw'elf'th man and plenty of casualties, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. In other words, exactly the sort of game I had hoped for. More of my Blood Bowl Articles Neil's First turn The Game I won the toss and chose to kick. My thinking was simple. I wanted to receive the ball at the start of the second half and have an opportunity to control the game later on. Neil's Norse team received and made steady progress up the pitch. Despite some determined resistance from the Ogres, the Norsemen eventually broke through and scored on turn four of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead. Fortunately, ...

Painting My Ogre Blood Bowl Team

Painting My Ogre Blood Bowl Team Last time, I was building my Ogre team and working out the starting roster. However, before I could get the team onto the pitch I needed to paint them. In order to paint the team, I needed to choose a colour scheme for the team's strip. I already knew how I wanted to paint the flesh on the Ogres and Gnoblars, but I wanted their sports kit to have a cohesive and relatively bright look that would truly belong to a fantasy football team. This article follows on from Building an Ogre Blood Bowl Roster , where I settled on the team's starting lineup and development plans. I have made it a personal rule to never play games with unpainted miniatures. I could say this is because painted miniatures are luckier, or that they have more character, or that it simply makes me paint them. I think in the end, it is because I like showing off my painted miniatures. I guess, that's why I put them on here! The first step will be to decide wha...

Building an Ogre Blood Bowl Roster

Image
Building an Ogre Blood Bowl Roster In my previous article, Building My First Blood Bowl Team in Twenty Years , I assembled my new Ogre Blood Bowl team and started thinking about how I wanted the team to develop. However, building the miniatures is only part of the process. Just because I have assembled a team does not mean I have a roster. As someone returning to Blood Bowl after almost twenty years away, I wanted to spend some time understanding what Ogre teams actually do, how they develop and what sort of starting roster I wanted to take into a league. This article forms the next stage of my Blood Bowl journey, which began with Returning to Blood Bowl After 20 Years . Understanding the Team Compared to many Blood Bowl teams, the choice of players in an Ogre teams is remarkably simple. The roster contains just three player types: Gnoblar Linemen, Ogre Blockers and the Ogre Runt Punter. The stars of the team are undoubtedly the Ogres. Whether fielded as Ogre Bloc...

Building My First Blood Bowl Team in 20 Years

Building My First Blood Bowl Team in Twenty Years In my previous article , I looked back at my history with Blood Bowl, from the Champions of Death in the 1990s through the Living Rulebook era and eventually to the conversation with Pete from the Agents of Sigmar that finally persuaded me to return to the game. At the time of writing, I still haven't played a game using the current edition of Blood Bowl. Before any dice are rolled, before any touchdowns are scored and before any opponents become half-time snacks I need to build and paint my new Ogre team. I never play a game with unpainted miniatures and I have no intention of starting now. Over the years I have developed my own way of approaching hobby projects and it has remained remarkably consistent since I first started collecting Warhammer Fantasy Battle back in 1990. I always build and paint the mandatory models first. Once the essentials are complete, I can reward myself by working on the more interestin...

Starting Blood Bowl in 2026: Returning After 20 Years Away

Starting Blood Bowl in 2026: Returning After 20 Years Away There are some games that never really leave you. The miniatures may end up boxed away in a loft. New editions may come and go. Entire gaming groups may move on to other systems. Yet every now and then something happens that reminds you why you enjoyed a game in the first place. For me, that game is Blood Bowl. At the time of writing, I have not actually returned to Blood Bowl. My first game is still later this month. The team has been ordered, the enthusiasm is there and I have started looking at the current rules, but for now I find myself standing on the edge of a hobby journey that I haven't undertaken for almost twenty years. If you are new to Jon Grant Miniatures, Start Here → The Early Years My first experience with Blood Bowl came in 1994. I had been in the hobby for four years and I was heavily invested in Warhammer Fantasy Battle, where I collected and played Undead. Unsurprisingly, my first Blood B...
