How I Paint - Legions Imperialis - Iron Warriors

Image
Paints used: Chaos Black Spray Iron Warriors Abaddon Black Averland Sunset Corax White Mephiston Red Balthasar Gold Yriel Yellow Evil Sunz Scarlet Wild Rider Red Leadbelcher Ironbreaker Eshin Grey Nuln Oil Agrax Earthshade Gryph-Charger Grey I began by undercoating the aircraft with Chaos Black Spray . The miniature was then given a basecoat with Iron Warriors with a small quantity of Abaddon Black . This was thinned with a little water. I applied two thin coats to get a nice solid base colour. When the basecoats were full dry,  Nuln Oil  was  painted into the recesses and around the panels of the aircraft using a small  detail brush. Try to be neat but do not  worry too much as you can always tidy the miniature up later.  Allow the Nuln Oil to full dry. Once fully dry, the miniature was dry brushed with Iron Warriors. This was followed by another dry brush of Leadbelcher. Then finally with Ironbreaker.  With the fuselage painted, I ...

Aeronautica Imperialis - Scenario - Bomber Escort

Image
UPDATED July 2025 BACKGROUND A flight of bombers pushes through enemy airspace, heading toward a vital target deep behind enemy lines. Each aircraft is heavy with ordnance, engines growling as they press on. To see them through, a wing of fighters flies in escort, scanning the skies for incoming threats. At any moment, enemy interceptors could strike, and the fighter pilots stand ready to defend their charges in brutal dogfights or die in the attempt. The mission is clear: reach the target, deliver the payload, and return. But danger looms ahead, and the sky is far from friendly.   FORCES The defender's force may cost between 100 and 200pts. The force must include at least one fighter and one bomber. The bombers cannot be equipped with extra weapons or upgrades. The defenders force cannot include ground defences. The attacker's force costs 75%  of the defending. The force may only include fighters. The attacker cannot include ground defences. Example A de...

Aeronautica Imperialis - Faction Review - Orks

Image
UPDATED July 2025 The Orks (along with the Imperial Navy) were one of the first two factions released for Aeronautica Imperialis . They've been a core part of the Warhammer 40,000 universe since its earliest days, and in Aeronautica Imperialis , they bring the same chaotic character and ramshackle charm. Orks are a straightforward faction, full of personality, but they aren’t the most powerful force on the table. Choosing to play Orks is a bit like turning the difficulty up to Hard mode.  This article includes several example aircraft with various weapon loadouts, each showing the average damage output you can expect in a single round of firing. Also, be sure to check out my YouTube channel – Jon Grant Miniatures for gameplay videos. Orks Air Waaagh! Ork firepower is most effective at short range, and their aircraft are designed to close the distance with the enemy as quickly as possible. The smaller Dakkajets and Fighta Bommerz boast high speed, allowing them to rapidly ...

Aeronautica Imperialis - Scenario - A Duel of Aces

Image
Background During the second war for Taros, Imperial and Tau air forces fought hundreds of engagements. During the war,  both sides have won victories and suffered defeats. Each side have their heroes. For the Imperium, it is Flight Commander Megana Ayce, in her Lightning Strike Fighter. For the Tau Empire, Kor'La Kae O'Ar, in her distinctive red Barracuda. The two aces finally met in combat over the Phyyra Heights. As Kae O'Ar led a patrol of the Red Horizon Cadre, she spotted an incoming Imperial attack. The two aces met head to head, and there would be only one survivor...  Forces Players can spend up to 150 points on their force. Both sides can only use Fighters. Bombers, Scouts and Ground Defences are not allowed. Both players must upgrade one of their fighters to an Ace for free. The Ace must be easily identifiable by your opponent . Set-up Players set up on opposite sides of the Area of Engagement. Starting with the winner of a roll-off, players take it in turns to p...

Aeronautica Imperialis - Legions of the Horus Heresy

Image
Legions in the Skies: A Review of Legion Traits for Aeronautica Imperialis In my Faction Review of the Adeptus Astartes , I concluded with a concept close to my heart—splitting a Legions Imperialis Space Marine aircraft box between two players. The idea is simple yet elegant: both players construct air wings simultaneously, each painting their craft in the proud colours of their chosen legion—one loyalist, one traitor. Before diving into legion-specific rules, players can focus on learning the basics. And once they’ve mastered movement, shooting, and objectives, they can then layer on the thematic flavour and mechanical depth of the legion traits. The result is a beautifully balanced game, driven by tactics, not imbalance—your manoeuvring, target prioritisation, and mission savvy will make or break your victory. Blood Angels and Emperor's Children And what better backdrop than the Horus Heresy itself? A galaxy-spanning civil war brimming with iconic grudges: the siege-craft of the...
