Hobby Goals - May 2025

Image
Painting This month, I had one main goal: finish painting the remaining two members of Borgit’s Beastgrabbaz. With these two Gitz complete, I would have all the Underworlds warbands painted—at least until the release of the Knives of the Crone. I started with Rigg and Sham, quickly painting the pair of Grots pretending to be Uglug’s pet squig, before moving on to Dregg. I finished both Grots on May 4th, thereby completing all the Underworlds warbands released so far. That very afternoon, Games Workshop announced the new warband would go on pre-order the following Saturday, May 10th. This meant I had until May 24th to paint other miniatures and work through my ever-diminishing pile of shame. My Beastgrabbaz I tackled a mob of five Loonsmasha Fanatics next. Following my usual paint scheme for the Gloomspite Gitz, I finished them by the 18th. The Loonsmashas The following weekend, the Knives of the Crone were released. I immediately built and started painting them, managing to complete Ta...

How I Paint - Knives of the Crone

How to Paint Daughters of Khaine Knives of the Crone Warhammer Underworlds features a wide range of distinct warbands, each with a strong visual identity tied to their faction. In this guide, I’ll show how I paint the Daughters of Khaine Knives of the Crone using a simple, repeatable method designed for clean, consistent tabletop results. New to painting Warhammer Miniatures → Start here: Warhammer Painting Made Simple For other miniature painting guides → Faction Painting Hubs The Knives of the Crone are a sub-sect of the Daughters of Khaine who follow Morai-Heg, the Crone, rather than Khaine himself. I wanted this warband to sit alongside my other Daughters of Khaine forces while still reflecting that difference in theme and character. To achieve this, I kept the overall approach consistent but moved away from the brighter blood reds used on my other warbands, instead focusing on blacks, greys, and darker red‑purple tones more in line with the imagery of the Crone. This creates...

How I choose a Warhammer Underworlds warband for a tournament

Image
Playing in Warhammer Underworlds: First Edition Tournaments I've been playing Warhammer Underworlds competitively for a couple of years now. I've had a bit of success. I generally finish within the top 8 of any event I attend, and I even won a small Rivals tournament. During the first edition of Underworlds, I used a range of warbands including Magore’s Fiends , Xandire’s Truthseekers , and Lady Harrow’s Mournflight . I always wanted the Truthseekers to perform better, but they never had the glory ceiling to be truly competitive. As a result, I switched to Lady Harrow’s Mournflight, partly because I have a large Nighthaunt force, and partly because I liked their faction cards and played with them for a full tournament season. The Truthseekers were the warband I first learned to play competitively with. They taught me about the importance of glory ceilings, the reliability of different playstyles, and how you can be "winning" through kills while still losing in...

Ylthari's Guardians - Warband Review

Image
Ylthari and her guardians grew from a soulpod grove in the Jade Embassy, which long ago stood on the verdant outskirt of Shadespire. The Sylvaneth of this enclave were envoys who spoke to the Katophranes on behalf of Alarielle, Queen of the Radiant Wood. They formed strong bonds with those that dwelt in and travelled through Shadespire, but all was sundered when Nagash cursed the city. In that instant, the Sylvaneth were cut down like wheat before the reaper's scythe, and the soulpods that housed their spirits were imprisoned within the Mirrored City. With the advent of the Necroquake, the life magic of Alarielle has been able to seep through cracks in reality back into Shadespire. Some of the Sylvaneth trapped there have stirred once more, with Ylthari [1] and her guardians: Gallanghann [2], Skhathael [3] and Ahnslaine [4] being the first to awaken. Imbuded with bountiful vigour and wrath, they seek the lost soulpods of their fallen kin.    Fighter Characteristics All fig...
