How I Paint - Knives of the Crone

The Knives of the Crone are a sub-sect of Daughters of Khaine. Unlike their sisters they do not worship Khaine, instead they follow Morai-Heg, the Crone. I wanted this warband to match my other Daughters of Khaine warbands, but at the same time shift away from the bright blood reds and move to the blacks, greys and dark red-purple more in line with the Crows.

When painting this warband, I used a wet palette.

I began with a light spray undercoat of Chaos Black, followed by a basecoat using Mechanicum Standard Grey spray.

Next (and this might seem a little odd), I gave the cloak and other fabric areas a basecoat of thinned Abaddon Black. I aimed to be reasonably neat, but knew I could tidy it up later.

I then painted the boots, bodices, and the vambraces with Barak-Nar Burgundy.

The feathers on the cloak were drybrushed with Stormvermin Fur.

All metal areas received a basecoat of Leadbelcher.

Once all these layers were dry, I applied a wash of Nuln Oil to shade everything uniformly.

I then carefully painted the flesh using Rakarth Flesh. This required two coats to achieve a smooth finish.

The metal armor was painted with a 2:1 mix of Screaming Bell and Stormhost Silver.

Next, I picked out the necklaces with Abaddon Black, before painting the icons using the same Screaming Bell and Stormhost Silver mix.

The flesh and metal armor were then shaded with Reikland Fleshshade.

Once dry, I highlighted the flesh first with Kislev Flesh, then with a mix of Kislev Flesh and a small amount of Flayed One Flesh.

I painted the eyes and teeth with Pallid Wych Flesh, then added a thin line of Carroburg Crimson into the mouths to define the gaps between the teeth. A final dot of Incubi Darkness was used to complete the eyes.

The feathers were given another careful drybrush with Stormvermin Fur for added depth.

For the hair, I started with a basecoat of Corax White. I then applied a 1:1 wash of Druchii Violet and Contrast Medium, which helps the pigment settle into the recesses as it dries.

The hair was highlighted with a mix of White Scar (I now use Army Painter Matt White for its smoother consistency) and a touch of Dechala Lilac to subtly tint the white. This was thinned with water, and I carefully painted each strand. Final highlights were done with pure White Scar.

I prefer painting individual hairs over drybrushing, as it creates a cleaner and more polished finish.

I then moved on to highlight the purple leather clothing. I began with Barak-Nar Burgundy, followed by a 1:1 mix of Barak-Nar Burgundy and Genestealer Purple for finer highlights. Final highlights on the highest edges were done with Genestealer Purple.

The cloak and arm and leg strapping were highlighted first with a 1:1 mix of Eshin Grey and Abaddon Black. I then applied further highlights with Eshin Grey alone, and finished with a 1:1 mix of Eshin Grey and Dawnstone. Be cautious not to overdo this last step—you want to avoid making the cloak appear too grey.

Next, I highlighted the metal areas. Weapon blades were highlighted with Ironbreaker, then edged with Stormhost Silver.

The armor was highlighted with a 2:1 mix of Hashut Copper and Stormhost Silver. Final edge highlights were done with the same mix, but with more Stormhost Silver added.

For the jewels, I applied a basecoat of Incubi Darkness. I then painted a small cross highlight using Kabalite Green, followed by a smaller cross using Sybarite Green.

As a final touch, I applied makeup to the face. After all, she is a Witch Aelf and needs to look the part on the battlefield.

I made a glaze of Temple Guard Blue (thinned with Lahmian Medium) and applied it as eyeshadow. A second glaze made with Screamer Pink (also thinned with Lahmian Medium) was applied to the cheekbones as blush.

When working with glazes, it’s best to err on the side of being too thin. Multiple layers can be applied for the desired effect. Just make sure each layer dries completely before applying the next.
