How I Paint Steeds of Slaanesh By Jon Grant, 23rd April 2026 This post contains Amazon affiliate links. If you purchase through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. For many years, I have enjoyed collecting and painting the various Daemons of Chaos. After rooting around in my pile of shame, I came across the Slaaneshi daemon sprues from the 2019 box set Wrath and Rapture and decided it was time they were built and painted. I am a fan of the classic paint scheme for all GW miniatures. In 1990, when I first started painting miniatures, Slaanesh was always associated with pastel colours. Back in 1988, Realms of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness was released. This book, which I own a copy of, detailed the forces of Khorne and Slaanesh for the first time. I used the description of the Steeds of Slaanesh as the basis for this guide: “Mounts of Slaanesh are bipedal, combining the appearance of a horse and an ostrich. They have two long, feminine legs, and a crest of vi...

Thricefold Discord - Warband Review

Thricefold Discord - A Warhammer Underworlds Warband Review By Jon Grant, 17th March 2026 Introduction The Spitewood loomed ahead, its tangled boughs blocking what little light tried to pierce the shadows of the undergrowth. Even in Ghyran, this was a place where life had festered into bitterness. If there were whispers of secrets buried deep, they might linger here. A cloud of cloying perfume filled the air as the Thricefold Discord entered the forest, drawn by that possibility. In their endless quest to find their lost master, they sought sensation, rumour, and echo in all its forms. Even here, in this hateful wood, there might be a trace of Slaanesh. Vexmor the Excessively Indolent [1] lumbered forward, his sheer presence pressing down on the forest around him. At his side, Vashtiss the Coiled [2] wove subtle sorceries, drawing out the forest’s ancient malice and testing it for meaning and memory. Lascivyr, the Bladed Blessing [3], surged ahead in ecstatic violence, carving th...

Chaos Daemons, the best army from Games Workshop.

Why Chaos Daemons Are the Best Hobby Army Now, before some of you read further—I’m not writing this article because this army is the most competitive or the strongest (although it could be). If you're looking for an army just to win games, then Chaos Daemons probably aren’t it. I'm writing this because, in my opinion, they are simply the best hobby faction that Games Workshop has to offer. Why is that, you ask? The Legacy of Chaos in Warhammer Let’s go back to 1988. Before I even got into the hobby, Games Workshop released Realms of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness,  a book that introduced Khorne and Slaanesh (and yes, it also included rules for Grey Knights in Rogue Trader , the first version of Warhammer 40,000 ). I started the hobby in 1990 and was around for the release of Realms of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned , which covered Nurgle and Tzeentch. These two books laid the foundation for the Chaos pantheon, both in the 41st Millennium and the Mortal Realms. I think this might e...

How I paint - Chaos Daemons - Daemonettes of Slaanesh

How I Paint Daemonettes of Slaanesh By Jon Grant 16th March 2023 I have been an enthusiastic fan of Daemons of Chaos for many years. As such, I bought the Wrath and Rapture box set a few years ago and painted up the Daemons of Khorne. The Daemons of Slaanesh, however, have remained on the sprue. This year, I set myself a hobby goal to paint more miniatures than I buy, so I am now working through my backlog. I wanted to paint my Daemons of Slaanesh in line with the descriptions from the old Realms of Chaos books. They have creamy, pale skin and large, emerald pools for eyes, but instead of hair, most have horny bone ridges. Instead of hands, their arms end in scythe-like talons, much like a crab's claw. These man-sized Daemons stand upon two legs that end in two-toed feet fitted with black talons. They have creamy, pale skin and large emerald pools for eyes. Instead of hair, most have horny bone ridges. Their arms end in scythe-like talons, much like a crab’s claw. These man-size...
