How I Paint - Chaos Daemons - Steeds of Slaanesh

How I Paint Steeds of Slaanesh

For many years, I have enjoyed collecting and painting the various Daemons of Chaos. After rooting around in my pile of shame, I came across the Slaaneshi daemon sprues from the 2019 box set Wrath and Rapture and decided it was time they were built and painted.

I am a fan of the classic paint scheme for all GW miniatures. In 1990, when I first started painting miniatures, Slaanesh was always associated with pastel colours.

Back in 1988, Realms of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness was released. This book, which I own a copy of, detailed the forces of Khorne and Slaanesh for the first time. I used the description of the Steeds of Slaanesh as the basis for this guide:

“Mounts of Slaanesh are bipedal, combining the appearance of a horse and an ostrich. They have two long, feminine legs, and a crest of vivid green hair runs the length of their back. The glossy fur on the legs and upper part of the body is a pale lavender colour, while the head, tail, and underside are pastel yellow with mottled deep red markings. They have a long, tubular snout ending in a small mouth, from which their long, electric-blue tongue shoots constantly back and forth.”

Paints used:

  • Army Painter White Spray
  • Army Painter Matt White
  • Naggaroth Night
  • Shyish Purple
  • Dechala Lilac
  • Yriel Yellow
  • Iyanden Yellow
  • Kabalite Green
  • Aethermatic Blue
  • Sybarite Green
  • Zandri Dust
  • Skeleton Horde
  • Ushabti Bone
  • Screaming Skull
  • Snakebite Leather
  • Iron Hands Steel
  • Stormhost Silver
  • Lothern Blue
  • Tyran Blue
  • Dark Angels Green
  • Contrast Medium
  • Lahmian Medium

The miniature was undercoated with White Spray. I used Army Painter White.

The back and legs of the miniature were given a basecoat of a 4:1 mix of Army Painter White and Naggaroth Night.

Once dry, this was painted over with a 4:4:1 mix of Contrast Medium, Lahmian Medium, and Shyish Purple.

Once this was dry, the purple was lightly drybrushed with Dechala Lilac. This was followed by a second drybrush of Dechala Lilac mixed with white. To finish the lavender tones, I thinned down Dechala Lilac with water to a milky consistency and painted this over the larger, flatter areas of the legs.

The underside of the steed was painted with
White mixed with a small quantity of Yriel Yellow to produce a pastel yellow. Once dry, this was painted over with a 4:4:1 mix of Contrast Medium, Lahmian Medium, and Iyanden Yellow.

The underside was then lightly drybrushed with the same pastel yellow mix. After this, the paint was thinned with water and applied to the larger flat areas of the underside.

Next, I moved on to the green fur and fins along the back of the neck and tail of the steed. To begin with, this was given a basecoat of White mixed with a small quantity of Kabalite Green. Once dry, this was painted over with a 2:2:1 mix of Contrast Medium, Lahmian Medium, and Aethermatic Blue. The fur was then lightly drybrushed with a pastel green made from Sybarite Green and white.

The horns, claws, and saddle on the steed were painted with Zandri Dust mixed with white.

The horns and claws were then washed with a 2:2:1 mix of Contrast Medium, Lahmian Medium, and Skeleton Horde. They were highlighted first with Ushabti Bone, then Screaming Skull, and finally with a mix of Screaming Skull and white. In each case, the highlights were applied as thin vertical lines along the horns and claws, with each successive highlight covering a shorter area toward the tip.

The saddle was painted over with a 4:4:1 mix of Contrast Medium, Lahmian Medium, and Snakebite Leather. It was first highlighted with Ushabti Bone, then given edge highlights with Screaming Skull.

The metal bracelets on the legs of the steed were painted with Iron Hands Steel. Once dry, this was painted over with a 4:4:1 mix of Contrast Medium, Lahmian Medium, and Shyish Purple. The metal was then highlighted with Stormhost Silver.

The tongue was basecoated with Lothern Blue. Once dry, it was washed with Tyran Blue. The tongue was then given minimal highlights, first with Lothern Blue, then with Lothern Blue mixed with white.

To finish, the eyes were picked out with Dark Angels Green.

The daemonette was painted using my How I paint Daemonette guide before I attached them together.

Finally, I based the miniature.
