Hobby Goals - April 2025

Image
Painting Once again, I set myself the goal of painting one Warhammer Underworlds warband during April. With only two warbands left in my collection, I chose to paint the Jaws of Itzl, leaving Borgit’s Beastgrabbaz for last. As usual, I like to keep my warbands from the same faction visually consistent, so I wanted the Jaws to match the Starblood Stalkers I painted a few years ago. To achieve this, I followed my  How I Paint Seraphon  guide. The aim was to create natural-looking dinosaurs with obsidian and gold weapons and armour. I painted the venomites to resemble real-world poisonous and venomous creatures, like Poison Dart Frogs, Coral Snakes, and Gila Monsters, using bright, vibrant colours. My Jaws With the Jaws complete, I’d reached my goal for the month — but it was only April 10th! So, I got to work on the Beastgrabbaz. I started with Uglug, the Troggoth, aiming to paint him as a small Dankhold Troggoth. I wanted him to have purple flesh, so I experimented a bi...

Hobby Goals - March 2025

Painting My Tunnelpack In March, I set myself one painting goal: to finish an entire Underworlds warband. Of the three I had yet to paint, only Zikkit's Tunnelpack were built and primed, so I chose to start with them. These Clan Skryre Skaven were painted with a scheme in mind—mainly copper and green—to represent their arcane science and warpstone-infused warlock engineering. I followed my usual " How I Paint Skaven " method for most of the miniatures, swapping out the typical reds for greens. I began, as I usually do, with the smallest models, then moved on to the mini doomwheel, and finally finished with Zikkit himself. Overall, I’m really pleased with how the warband turned out—the green and copper work well together, and I achieved my goal of completing a full warband. With Zikkit's crew complete, I went ahead and built the Jaws of Itzl and Borgit’s Beastgrabbaz. Some of these models will likely be next month’s painting project. Gaming At the start of April...

Hobby Goals - February 2025

Happy 2025 everybody! It has been a few months since I last sat down to write about what I have been up to in my hobby. Life has been incredibly busy, mainly with work but also with family commitments, leaving little time for much else. Painting I haven't had much time — or inclination — to pick up my paintbrush. One reason is that the area where I paint in my house tends to get quite cold during the winter months, which doesn't make for a particularly inviting workspace. On top of that, by the time I've been free to paint, there's often no daylight left — and I definitely prefer painting with natural light. However, here in the UK, the light has been gradually returning, and with that, I've found myself drawn back to my painting desk. I have several Underworlds warbands waiting for attention, so I decided to start with the Plaguebearers of Nurgle from the Grandfather Gardeners set. My Gardeners I have a large army of Plaguebearers that I painted when Age of Sigmar ...

Hobby Goals - December 2024

Image
It’s been a few months since my last hobby goals update. Life has been quite hectic, leaving me little time for painting or gaming. However, this month, despite a packed schedule, I managed to carve out some time to make meaningful progress. Painting This month, I began by completing the three Stormcast Eternals of the Emberwatch. I painted them in my standard Hallowed Knights scheme to match my long-time favorites, Xandire's Truthseekers. With this cohesive look, I plan to use the Emberwatch as my primary warband in the coming months. After finishing the Emberwatch, I turned my attention to the Grandfather's Gardeners. As part of my larger Daemons of Nurgle army, I aimed to ensure this warband fit seamlessly with my Plaguebearers. My process started with painting the flesh tones across all the miniatures before adding intricate details. By the end of the month, I had completed Strewg and Squort and made significant progress on the remaining models. Gaming My first game this mo...

Hobby Goals - September 2024

September ended up being a relatively quiet month for my hobby. I had a busy month with work, and the lack of new Warhammer Underworlds miniatures sapped my enthusiasm for painting a little. I started the month by looking through some boxes in the loft and found a single Storm Eagle from Aeronautica Imperialis. I decided to paint it in the yellow of the Imperial Fists. It was a quick little miniature, but it was nice to return to painting the small planes. How I Paint - Imperial Fists . Imperial Fist Storm Eagle Next, I switched to two of the Blood Warriors I had primed last month. I have been enjoying using Magore's Fiends in some practice games, and the angry men inspired me to paint a few fellow warriors. I would like to get a few more of these painted. Blood Warriors This month, I did not buy any miniatures, so I could tick off my first hobby goal: " Do not buy any miniatures in a month ." Even though I only painted three miniatures, that's still more than I bough...

Hobby Goals - August 24

Image
For the first few weeks of August, I was away on holiday and, as such, did no hobby activities. Painting Having completed all the available Warhammer Underworlds warbands last month, I moved on to reducing my pile of shame by painting more of my Gloomspite Gitz. Last month, I had started a unit of ten Squig Hoppers. With these complete, I moved on to the second half of a unit of Squigs with their herder. I had four Squigs and one herder to paint. For both units, I used my " How I Paint – Moonclan Grots " and " How I Paint – Squigs " guides. In addition to painting, I built a random group of miniatures, including: Two Pusgoyle Blightlords Three Fiends of Slaanesh Five Loonsmasha Fanatics Five Blood Warriors Five Blood Reavers As my painting is not very focused at the moment, these miniatures will give me some options over the next few weeks. Gaming This month, I managed to play eight games of Warhammer Underworlds. I have been practicing for an upcoming tournament. P...

Hobby Goals - July '24

Image
July came around, and I had one goal in mind: to paint my 58th Underworlds warband, the Shadeborn. This warband would complete my collection, meaning I had painted all the warbands released to date. Painting When painting the Shadeborn, I wanted them to connect with my other Daughters of Khaine warband. However, they needed to be distinct since they are Khanites rather than Witch Aelves. I used my Daughters of Khaine guide but swapped out the red clothing for purple and burgundy. I finished the warband at the start of the month, meaning I had "nothing" left to paint. Although my pile of shame has significantly reduced over the last two years, I decided to buy ten Squig Hoppers to complete my Gloomspite Gitz spearhead. As I am batch painting the unit, it is taking some time, but the basecoats and shades are nearly done. I got a little bored with the Squig Hoppers and decided to paint a few more Nighthaunts. I built and painted five Bladeheist Revenants over a couple of days ...

Hobby Goals - June 2024

Image
At the start of June, I had two remaining Warhammer Underworlds warbands: the Shadeborn and the Brethren of the Bolt. I set myself a goal for the month: to paint at least one of these warbands. Painting I chose to start with the Brethren of the Bolt, a five-miniature warband. Having played Warhammer for many years, I envisioned my Brethren adorned in the blues of Azyr, inspired by the Celestial wizards of Warhammer Fantasy Battle. I aimed for a variety of blue robes to avoid a uniform look. As usual, I began with the most basic miniature, Acolyte Arcus, to establish the color palette for the entire warband. Once satisfied, I progressed through the other miniatures, culminating in painting the leader, Pater Filius. The Brethren of the Bolt By the end of June 2024, I had successfully ' painted a Warhammer Underworlds warband ' once again (for a total of 43 miniature so far this year). Only one warband remained: the four fighters of the Shadeborn. Additionally, I purchased a pair ...
