Hobby Goals - August 25

Painting

At the start of the month, I eagerly anticipated the arrival of Kamandora's Blades. Even though the warband wasn’t exactly well received by the community when first revealed, I had a plan! I decided to paint the controversial faces as if they were covered with warpaint. In my vision, these devoted followers of Khorne daubed their skin with ash and charcoal to form a skull-like visage, honoring the Blood God. I quickly painted the warband and shared them online — and was delighted to receive plenty of praise in return, which is always nice. (My full painting guide can be found below in the Blogging section.)

My Kamandora's Blades

With the Blades complete, I was once again fully up to date with my Warhammer Underworlds painting backlog. That freed me to pursue a project I’d been mulling over for some time: building a 3D Warhammer Underworlds board.

My Underworlds Board, complete with blocked hexes

I’ve already written a dedicated article on this board, so I won’t repeat myself here. If you’re curious, you’ll find the link in the Blogging section further down.

Once the board was finished, I moved on to painting three Gryph-Hounds from my ever-shrinking pile of shame. I painted them to match Beakie, my loyal little mascot, and updated my Gryph-Hound painting guide at the same time.

I rounded off the month by starting on a few more projects, including work on some Spearheads and Warcry warbands.

Gaming

This month I managed to play a fair number of games, many of them online using Tabletop Simulator (TTS) with Harry. Early on, I decided to give the Headsman’s Curse a proper run. By the end of the month, though, I had drifted back into experimenting with a variety of different warbands as I kept working to sharpen my play.

Since the Headsman’s Curse are a Strike warband, I wanted to test them alongside the Raging Slayers deck. My thinking was that the built-in reroll from the Raging Slayers plot card would prove particularly useful. What I learned, however, is that very few of the Raging Slayers objectives are actually worth taking.

As the month wound down, my thoughts turned to the question: what warband should I take to my next tournament? That will be my main focus heading into September.

Blogging

August was a busy month for painting, gaming, and even gardening — but I still found time to write up several new articles, including:

Beakie Merch!

This month I also had a bit of fun creating a few t-shirts and mugs featuring Beakie in various guises, which are available to buy over on Spring. You can now find:

  • Beakie as a Halloween ghost

  • Beakie as a D&D wizard

  • Beakie as a Witch-hunter

It’s been great to see my little mascot take on these new roles, and I’m really pleased with how they turned out.

Finally...

The blog itself also had a great month, setting another all-time high with over 11,500 views in August. I’m truly grateful to everyone who stopped by.

I’d still love to foster more conversation with readers, so please don’t hesitate to leave a comment on any article — I always reply. I’m also deeply thankful to the thirteen wonderful people who now follow me: my Lurkers in the Dark. Maybe you’d like to join them?
