Hobby Goals - September 25
Painting
September is always an incredibly busy month for real-life commitments, so hobby time was limited. Even so, I managed to make some progress on a few projects.
I continued adding new tiles to my modular board. First up was a nine-hex stream to clearly mark neutral territory. In several games I’d found it tricky for opponents to determine where neutral ground began, and I wanted the board to be as fun and easy to use as possible for everyone.
Next, I created 14 new starting hexes in preparation for the upcoming Spitewood expansion. I marked them with clusters of purple heather. My idea was that the colour would stand out clearly, while still looking natural as part of a heathland scene (inspired by the moorlands of northern England where I grew up).
Finally, I built a set of four Waystone tokens, again for the Spitewood board. These were my first attempt, and while I’m happy with them, I may experiment with different designs in the future.
On the painting desk, my main project was a warband of Pyregheists. I’ve admired these miniatures from afar since their release, and I was thrilled to finally get hold of them. I painted them in my usual Nighthaunt scheme, but wanted to experiment with the flames, since they’re such a defining feature of the models. They’re not quite finished yet, I still need to apply the green basecoat to the flames, but they should be ready just in time for me to dive into painting the new Underworlds warbands.
Gaming
This month I continued to experiment with a few different warbands, mixing up old favourites in new combinations before finally trying something completely fresh: Blackpowder's Buccaneers.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Ogor Mawtribes (or Ogre Kingdoms, as I still like to think of them). So, picking up Blackpowder felt like a natural choice. They might be a little underpowered compared to other options, but they’re still a fantastic-looking warband with loads of character.
Next month, or rather, in just a few days, I’ll be heading to a tournament. This time I wanted a change of pace. I don’t want the event to be all about chasing wins or feeling the pressure of competition. Instead, I’m leaning into the fun side of the game: taking a warband I love, one that doesn’t quite work on paper, and seeing what they can do on the tabletop.
My goal is simple: win more games than I lose. With Blackpowder that’s likely to be a tough ask, but I’m giving it a go anyway.
I’ll report back after the tournament to share how the Buccaneers fared, whether they managed to plunder some glory, or if they ended up sinking without so much as a single shiny.

Blogging
With work keeping me extremely busy this month, I decided to run a little experiment with the blog. I wanted to see how it would perform if I simply let it tick along on its own. So, I deliberately avoided any self-promotion and just let things play out naturally.
I did still manage to write one new article: a Warband Review of Blackpowder’s Buccaneers.
So how did the site do without any pushing? Even with minimal input, the blog still pulled in 10,244 views in September. I’m truly grateful to everyone who stopped by, read an article, or browsed through the archives.
I’d still love to foster more conversation with readers, so please don’t hesitate to leave a comment on any article — I always reply. I’m also deeply thankful to the thirteen wonderful people who now follow me: my Lurkers in the Dark. Maybe you’d like to join them?
