Lurkers in the Dark

Hobby Goals - February 26

February Hobby Update

Painting

Throughout February I continued experimenting with Contrast paints. My first project was a return to an old favourite from Warhammer Underworlds, Lady Harrow's Mournflight. They are no longer current competitively, but I wanted to see how they would look in my newer green scheme.

My Emerald Host Mournflight

This version is noticeably lighter than the scheme I used on Thorns of the Briar Queen, although it relies on the same core paints. The difference is mainly in application and how heavily I allowed the Contrast to settle.

Once the banshees were finished, I moved on to Blood of the Bull. For these I followed a scheme demonstrated by Josh, the Warhipster, over on YouTube. It has been useful to see how someone else approaches Contrast as a primary method rather than just a supplement.

Progress on my Blood of the Bull

I have not quite finished the warband yet. At this stage I do not think I will continue using Contrast paints for entire miniatures. However, the process has been worthwhile. I have picked up techniques that will work well alongside a more traditional layered approach, particularly for speed and initial colour blocking.

Gaming

February was largely spent preparing for the Spitewood Smash, a Warhammer Underworlds Nemesis event hosted by the Agents of Sigmar.

I intended to take Blackpowder's Buccaneers, so I needed to get a few practice games in. The games went reasonably well. I did not have the time to explore new deck combinations in any meaningful depth, so preparation focused more on improving my decks flow rather than trying new ideas.

Blogging

During February I began an Analysis Series focused on Warhammer Underworlds. The aim is to explore why certain warbands become meta defining and, in some cases, meta warping.

I started with a relatively straightforward concept, Durability. The intention is to publish one article per month that takes a deeper look at a specific topic. The first piece attempts to establish a framework that can be built upon in later articles. I am hoping this will prompt discussion and that others will offer perspectives that can be incorporated into future analysis.

This month’s posts included

I also revisited my Aeronautica Imperialis reviews and updated the Imperial Navy section to reflect my current thinking.

Milestone

On 3rd February 2026 the blog reached 150,000 views. I reached 100,000 views on 13th October 2025, so that is 50,000 additional views in 113 days.

If you’re enjoying the content, hit that Follow button at the top of the page. It really helps and keeps you updated! Maybe, I can reach 50 followers this year.

If you’d like to support the site a little more, why not take a look at my Beakie-themed merchandise — featuring everyone’s favourite bird in a range of designs?
