Hobby Goals - December 25

Painting

I have not had much time for hobby this month, with work being very busy and the build up to Christmas well under way. I did, however, manage to finish painting Kurnoth’s Heralds, one of the two warbands from the Spitewood box set for Warhammer Underworlds.

My Heralds

They took me quite a bit of time, as I painted them in the same scheme as Skaeth’s Wild Hunt from the Beastgrave season of the game. Unfortunately, I did not particularly enjoy painting them. Still, they are finished now, which is the important thing.

This year I painted a total of 54 miniatures. This includes eight Warhammer Underworlds warbands:

  • A squadron of Iron Warriors Xiphons for Aeronautica Imperialis (3 miniatures)
  • The Pyregheists, a Warcry warband (8 miniatures)
  • A pack of Gryph hounds (3 miniatures)
  • A unit of Gloomspite Loonsmashas (5 miniatures)
  • Grandfather’s Gardeners (5 miniatures)
  • Zikkit’s Tunnelpack (5 miniatures)
  • The Jaws of Itzl (4 miniatures)
  • Borgit’s Beastgrabbaz (5 miniatures)
  • The Knives of the Crone (4 miniatures)
  • Kamandora’s Blades (5 miniatures)
  • Daggok’s Stab Ladz, painted for a second time using Contrast paints (4 miniatures)
  • Kurnoth’s Heralds (3 miniatures)

Looking ahead to next year, I plan to properly learn how to use Contrast paints. I intend to paint second versions of some warbands, and I am currently building a set of Thorns of the Briar Queen.


Gaming

At the beginning of December we had a single club night, where I continued practising with Blackpowder and played two games.

On the 30th of December, I met up with five others for a small round of games where each of us played everyone else. Players were free to change warbands and decks throughout the day, but we kept track of wins and losses.

By the end of the day, I had won the most games and scored the second highest total glory with 82, just behind Pete’s Wurmspat on 83. I lost one game to Robin’s Kamandora’s Blades but won the other four, beating the Wurmspat, Kurnoth’s Heralds, the Gnarlspirit Pack and Thorns of the Briar Queen.

This was the second year in a row we have met up like this, and it looks to be the start of a Christmas tradition.


Since April 2025, I have played 67 games. Hopefully, I am actually getting better at the game.


Blogging

I did not manage to finish many articles this December, but I do have several ideas in progress that should come together in the New Year.

I did finish - Warhammer Underworlds: Invaders, a look at the cards from the different Rivals decks that interact with Enemy Territory.

The blog continues to receive a large number of views, which is immensely pleasing. I have set myself the goal of reaching a quarter of a million views, or 250,000, by New Year’s Eve 2026.

How I paint - Gloomspite Gitz- Squigs

When collecting Gloomspite Gitz it quickly becomes apparent that at some point you are going to paint squigs. This is my take on a classic red squig. Paints required: Wraithbone spray Khorne Red Army Painter Red Tone Averland Sunset Wazdakka Red Squig Orange Lahmian Medium Reikland Fleshwash Screamer Pink Pink Horror Pallid Wych Flesh Zandri Dust Agrax Earthshade Xereus Purple Genestealer Purple Yriel Yellow Druchii Violet .  Kantor Blue Thousand Sons Blue Ahriman Blue Temple Guard Blue . The miniatures were primed with Wraithbone spray. The scheme works over black, but you must build a nice sold layer of red at the start. This was then followed by a basecoat of Khorne Red . I thinned the Khorne Red with a little water. It took a few coats to get a nice solid finish. The miniature was then given a wash with Army Painter Red Tone thinned with a little water. How I Paint Zombie Flesh

Zombies have been a staple of many Fantasy and Science Fiction setting for years. Warhammer is no exception. Over the years, I have mainly collected Undead armies for Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Age of Sigmar. Back when I had a Vampire Counts army, I had many hordes of Zombies. Now, I am looking to paint my Exiled Dead warband from Warhammer Underworlds. To do this, I decided to do some research on the Internet. I know I have ‘stolen’ these ideas from somewhere, but I wrote them done and cannot remember where I got them from. All the zombies were given an undercoat of  Chaos Black spray . I then gave the miniatures a light dusting with Zandri Dust spray . This will make applying the basecoats easier. Zombie #1 The flesh of the first zombie (or I this case Prentice Marcov) was given a basecoat of Mechanicum Standard Grey . When this was dry the miniature was washed with Reikland Fleshshade . How I Paint - Skaven - Clan Eshin

As I continue to work through the various Warhammer Underworlds warbands, I finally reached Skittershank's Clawpack,  a group of Clan Eshin Skaven. I decided to paint them in the classic scheme of brown fur and black robes. Here is my guide. More of my  How to paint... articles  can be found here. Undercoats The miniature was undercoated with Chaos Black Spray . I then gave the whole miniature a basecoat of Mournfang Brown , thinned with a little water. Once the basecoat was dry, I gave the fur a very light drybrush of Karak Stone . This may look a little harsh, but the washes will soften the effect in a later stage. Basecoats The next step was to block in all the base colours on the miniature. I began with the flesh on the nose, ears, hands, and feet. This was painted with a 1:1 mix of Bugman’s Glow and Cadian Fleshtone . I made sure to feather the edges between the fur and flesh on the hands and feet. The eyes were painted Mephiston Red .
