My final army for Warhammer Fantasy Battle, before it became the Age of Sigmar, was the Ogre Kingdoms. Now in the Mortal Realms, the Ogres Kingdoms have become the Ogor Mawtribes. As ever, the Ogors are supported by their faithful gnoblars. The gnoblars are a sub species of the Greenskin race and serve as pets, scavengers and occasionally as a snack for their Ogor masters.
I have always been a fan of classic paint schemes. When the Ogres were first released, the gnoblar had a grey-green fleshtone setting them apart from the classic goblin. I knew I wanted to repeat this when I came to paint Hrothgorn's Mantrappers for Season 3 of Warhammer Underworlds. I again used this scheme for Blackpowder's Buccaneers.
Paints required:
- Stormvermin Fur
- Athonian Camoshade
- Dawnstone
- Adminstratum Grey
- Lahmian Medium
- Kislev Flesh
- Cadian Fleshtone
- Mephiston Red
- Evil Suns Scarlet
- Black Templar
- Pallid Wych Flesh
- Nuln Oil
- Xerus Purple
The miniature was given an undercoat with Chaos Black spray.
The skin of the gnoblar was given a basecoat of Stormvermin Fur. Make sure this coat is nice and solid with a couple of thin coats.
The skin was then washed with Athonian Camoshade. This wash gives the flesh a green tinge as well shading the flesh.
The flesh was then highlighted with watered-down Dawnstone. By thinning this layer paint down it becomes more transleucent. The highlight restores some of the grey colouring to the flesh without eliminating the green completely.
The flesh was then further highlighted with watered-down Administratum Grey. Apply these highlights sparingly.
The flesh was then glazed with a 2:1 mix of Lahmian Medium and Athonian Camoshade. This glaze serves to restore the green tinge of the flesh but because it was thinned the Athonian Camoshade will not obscure the highlights.
The next steps add some character to the features of the gnoblar and give it a more organic feel.
The nose and ears were highlighted with Kislev Flesh. This paint was focused on the tips of the nose and ears.
Cadian Fleshtone was then applied to end of the nose and the tips of the ears, making sure to leave some of the Kislev Flesh showing. Finally, the extreme tip of the nose and ears were painting with a mix of Cadian Fleshtone and a small quantity of Mephiston Red. The addition of these red tones helps to give a nice organic feel to the face and, I think, really adds some character.
The eye sockets were first painted in with Black Templar. This gives a nice dark base for the bright red of the actual eyes. The eyes of the gnoblar were painted with Mephiston Red. These were then highlighted with Evil Suns Scarlet.
The teeth were picked out using Pallid Wych Flesh. I like to give the teeth a wash with Nuln Oil.
Once the teeth were finished, the lower lip was given a glaze with watered-down Xerus Purple.
I finished off the rest of the miniature with various shades of brown for the clothing. I like this scheme as it is reasonably quick and gives a nice characterful finish. I hope you like it and let me know how you get on with it. Happy hobbying!
