Nighthaunt are my main force in Warhammer Age of Sigmar. They are visually striking army, combining ghostly effects, flowing robes, and glowing magical energy. They can be painted quickly using simple methods, or pushed further with more detailed approaches.

In this guide, I’ve brought together all of my Nighthaunt painting methods, covering different styles and techniques so you can choose what works best for your army.

Brushes and tools used

The Citadel (synthetic) brushes are good relatively inexpensive brushes that I use for most of my basecoat and shading work. When I move onto highlights and detail and then switch to the more expensive Raphael and Windsor & Newton brushes.

Recently, I bought a set of Army Painter Hobby Starter brush set (Amazon Affiliate Link). This set contains a Small Drybrush, Fine Detail & Standard (Medium) Brush. They are relatively inexpensive and are great for batch painting.

Brush care:

Once I’ve finished painting, I always clean my brushes with this to keep them in good condition.

Priming Sprays:

Choosing a Nighthaunt Colour Scheme

Nighthaunt are very flexible in terms of colour schemes. Most approaches focus on a ghostly transition between dark and light tones.

  • Classic white/grey ghost effect
  • Green spectral glow
  • Darker, moodier tones

Tip: Pick one dominant style for your army to keep it consistent.

How to Paint Nighthaunt (White)

This is a more traditional ghostly approach, using pale tones and soft transitions.

How to Paint Nighthaunt (Green)

This is a fast method that gives strong results with relatively little effort.

Painting Nighthaunt – Extra Details

Once the main scheme is complete, adding small details can make a big difference.

  • Candles
  • Magical Energy
  • Glowing Swords

Skeletons, Skulls, and Bone

Bone details are everywhere in Warhammer armies, from trophies to weapons and bases.

How to Paint Green Flames

Green flames are a key visual element for many Nighthaunt models.

  • Start dark and build toward bright highlights
  • Focus lightest areas at the centre
  • Keep edges softer for a glowing effect

Here is how these techniques come together across a full army.

This shows how keeping your scheme consistent across units creates a strong visual impact on the table.

Nighthaunt in Warhammer Underworlds

I’ve also applied these techniques to smaller warbands in Warhammer Underworlds:

These smaller groups are a great way to experiment with variations in your painting style. I use them to build smaller forces of miniatures with different colour schemes

Bringing It All Together

The most important thing when painting Nighthaunt is consistency.

  • Keep your main colour scheme consistent
  • Use glow effects to create focal points
  • Balance speed and detail depending on the importance of the model

Final Thoughts

Nighthaunt are an excellent army for both beginners and experienced painters. You can achieve effective results quickly, but there is also plenty of scope to push techniques further.

By combining a simple base method with a few key detail techniques, you can create a strong and cohesive army.
