Hobby Goals - July 25

Painting

After some time away from painting, I finally found a comfortable way to pick up my brushes again. I started by returning to the Knives of the Crone. Having finished Tazari last month, I continued work on Kaerna Vix, Krieta, and Azphael. I finished them in reasonably short order, as most of the basecoats were already applied. With these complete, I was once again up to date with Warhammer Underworlds. (64 warbands and all the terrain pieces).

I then decided to return to painting a few Aeronautica Imperialis aircraft. I wanted to paint them as members of the Fourth Legion, the Iron Warriors. It was really nice returning to my little planes, now I just need to get them on the board for a few games.

With nothing in particular to paint until Kamandora's Blades arrive on my doorstep, I popped into the loft for a look around. I found two large models I had started but never finished: the Feculent Gnarlmaw and Reikenor the Grimhailer, a Nighthaunt hero.

I began by tackling the Gnarlmaw. It is a relatively simple but time-consuming model to paint. It requires a range of techniques, but by working in sub-assemblies I made steady progress, I even documented the process. (Just a little note: I posted this picture on Reddit and it received quite a few 'down votes'. I'm not sure what is wrong with it, but hey-ho, you cannot please everyone.)

Next, I tackled Reikenor. Where the Gnarlmaw had a dark and grimy look (although I still kept the painting neat), all my Nighthaunts have a clean, blue-white scheme, which requires extra care. Once the “white” is done, it’s very difficult to correct mistakes. I really enjoyed painting this miniature, it reminded me how much I like the Nighthaunt. Maybe I should paint more of them and get them back into games. I do miss using Lady Harrow’s Mournflight in Warhammer Underworlds.

Reikenor the Grimhailer

Overall, a productive month. I have a surprise coming next month!

Gaming

This month I managed to get in a fair number of games, many of them online using Tabletop Simulator (TTS) with Harry. My main aim was to continue playing as many warbands and decks as possible, to develop a deeper understanding of their capabilities, and how best to counter them.

I’ve always favoured Strike decks, but this time I really fancied trying out Take and Hold with the Emberstone Sentinels, mainly to learn how to counter it. I started by using a pairing and warband I was already familiar with.

Table of results for July 2025

The month started well, with a couple of wins at my local club. But once I started playing Harry, it all went downhill. I was experimenting with all sorts of combinations, and Harry is a very good player, so I lost far more than I won. That said, I gained some solid insights, particularly around how difficult it is to hold onto Treasure tokens for multiple turns, especially with smaller, more elite warbands. Trying to hold them becomes your primary focus, which limits proactive play and leaves you open to your opponent’s moves.

Around mid-month, Games Workshop revealed the Spitewood and the next batch of incoming warbands. Since I’ve been playing Cyreni, who’s part of the digital-only Thirteen Warbands, I fully expect her to rotate out. That is fine, Xandire’s Truthseekers, one of my all-time favourites, are returning, as are Elathain’s Soulraid. Until then, I’ll keep rotating through different warbands and deck combinations. Having just painted Reikenor, I may give The Headsman’s Curse some more attention.

Blogging

As I mentioned last month, I had a few articles in mind to write. These included collection showcases for my Nighthaunts and Maggotkin of Nurgle, as well as a few Aeronautica scenarios. On top of that, I added more painting guides and warband reviews:

During July, my blogsite continued to draw plenty of views, very rewarding! I nearly matched last month’s all-time high but still exceeded 10,000 views for the month. I’m immensely grateful to everyone who dropped by.

I would still love to foster more discussion with readers, so please feel free to leave a comment on any article, I reply to all of them. I’m also very grateful to the twelve wonderful people now following me, my Lurkers in the Dark. Maybe you’d like to join them?
