How to Paint Zombie Flesh on Miniatures  By Jon Grant 26th September 2023 updated 6th May 2026 This post may contain Amazon affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Over the years, I have mainly collected Undead armies for Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Age of Sigmar. Back when I had a Vampire Counts army, I painted many shambling hordes of Zombies. More recently, I found myself returning to the archetype while working on my Exiled Dead warband for Warhammer Underworlds, along with the zombies from Zondara’s Gravebreakers. This gave me a great opportunity to experiment with a range of different flesh tones and levels of decay while still keeping the models feeling part of the same wider undead force. The Zombies of the Exiled Dead To do this, I decided to do a bit of research online. I...

How to Paint Weathered Armour on Miniatures – Aged Metal & Worn Plates Updates 6th May 2026 (first published 27th September 2023) As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This helps support the blog at no extra cost to you. Over the past few months I’ve been trying to improve my painting by developing repeatable ‘recipes’ for different surfaces and materials. Most recently, I’ve been focusing on painting old, worn metal. With the release of the Kruleboyz, I decided to work on an Orruk covered in armour using Morgok’s Krushas from Warhammer Underworlds. These models are ideal for this type of experiment. The armour is made up of large, flat metal plates and chainmail, with the idea that Orruks simply hammer the metal into shape. It doesn’t feel like something they would maintain particularly well, so I wanted a weathered, beaten finish without heavy rust . Warhammer Underworlds - Analysis Series - Guard

Warhammer Underworlds - Analysis Series - Guard By Jon Grant 1st May 2026 A few months ago, I started writing my Warhammer Underworlds Analysis Series . Here, I sought to uncover some of the maths buried in the game as a mechanism to influence decision‑making. The first article looked at durability in Warhammer Underworlds . This I defined as the total number of successful 2‑damage attacks required to remove all fighters in a warband. There are two key ways to think about this: Base Durability Assumes all attacks hit and all saves fail. This focuses purely on the Health and fighter count of a warband. Save‑Adjusted Durability Accounts for each fighter’s saves, which can cause attacks to fail and force your opponent to spend more activations to remove your fighters. Another idea you need to understand for this article is:  Save Breakpoint The Save Breakpoint is the point at which an attack reaches two successful hits, causing defensive Saves to become unreliable and du...

Hobby Goals - April 26

Jon Grant Miniatures April 2026 Hobby Update by Jon Grant 1st May 2026 Painting I began the month with the aim of painting Thanatek’s Tithe. As of the beginning of March, they were the only Warhammer Underworlds warband that I had yet to paint. I chose the same colour scheme I used for Kainan’s Reapers, bone and purples to represent Shyish, the Realm of Death. I really enjoyed painting this warband and I continue to love the Ossiarch Bonereaper aesthetic, although I doubt I will ever paint a larger force for them. While working on the Mortis Reapers, I also wrote a painting guide, which you can find linked here . My Tithe Afterwards, I decided to paint four Moonclan Grot archers for my Gloomspite Gitz. For these miniatures, I followed my existing Moonclan Grot painting guide. Returning to the loft, I rediscovered my Wrath and Rapture box set from 2019. I had finished painting the Khorne Daemons years ago, but most of the Slaaneshi daemons were still on the sprues. I decided...

How I Paint Steeds of Slaanesh By Jon Grant, 23rd April 2026 This post contains Amazon affiliate links. If you purchase through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. For many years, I have enjoyed collecting and painting the various Daemons of Chaos. After rooting around in my pile of shame, I came across the Slaaneshi daemon sprues from the 2019 box set Wrath and Rapture and decided it was time they were built and painted. I am a fan of the classic paint scheme for all GW miniatures. In 1990, when I first started painting miniatures, Slaanesh was always associated with pastel colours. Back in 1988, Realms of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness was released. This book, which I own a copy of, detailed the forces of Khorne and Slaanesh for the first time. I used the description of the Steeds of Slaanesh as the basis for this guide: “Mounts of Slaanesh are bipedal, combining the appearance of a horse and an ostrich. They have two long, feminine legs, and a crest of vi...
